Description:

We are looking for a curator to work in the Editorial Office of the Gene Ontology (GO) project at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

The GO project is a collaborative effort to construct and use ontologies to facilitate the biologically meaningful annotation of genes and their products in a wide variety of organisms. The GO Editorial Office plays a key role in managing the distributed task of developing and maintaining the GO vocabularies, and contributes to a number of other GO project efforts, including documentation, web presence, software testing, and user support.

The basic responsibilities of the GO curator include editing and maintaining the ontologies, in collaboration with GO personnel at other GO Consortium sites. Ontology development typically involves adding or changing terms, term-term relationships, and ancillary data such as text definitions, computable cross-product definitions, and synonyms. Many changes are made in response to requests from gene product annotators and other GO users, whereas other changes arise in the context of larger-scale revisions pertinent to a biological topic or to logical consistency and quality control. The curator may also initiate research that leads to ontology changes, using literature, internet resources, or direct contact with researchers.

In addition to editing the ontologies, the GO curator will participate in maintaining and updating GO documentation, including website and wiki content, covering the GO vocabularies, annotations, and related materials. The curator will participate in testing GO Consortium-produced software, and may contribute to the body of GO-related resources by writing scripts, e.g. for reporting and quality assurance purposes.

The GO curator will also participate in communicating GO to the wider scientific community by responding to queries received from GO users via GO helpdesk mailing list, attending and contributing to the GO Consortium meetings, presenting talks or posters at conferences and workshops in the USA and Europe, and writing papers and reports.

The typical candidate will have a PhD in biology, preferably with experience with one of the major model organisms, and well also have some post-doctoral experience. Computational skills, for example a familiarity with Unix/Linux, would be an advantage but is not essential.

The successful applicant must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, s/he should also work well both independently and within a team environment.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. It is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.
