LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
ENVIRONMENT: IC3 is a newly established climate institution settled by the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, aiming at understanding future climate change and the dynamics and theory underlying those changes. It has also as main interests the accurate simulation of the interplay between climate and the biosphere and its feedbacks and the development of seasonal-to-decadal predictability capacities. In addition to studying processes at the global scale, IC3 will focus on the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America and SE. Asia. IC3 is expected to grow to a total staff around 200 people, with about 125-150 scientists. Working languages of IC3 are English, Catalan and Spanish. For details, see www.ic3.cat.
Within IC3, the Unit for Climate Dynamics and Impacts (UDIC) focus on the improvement of the simulation of climate impacts, particularly climate effects on health, energy, food and the water cycle. UDIC is now seeking for a highly motivated young scientist to engage in the climate-driven diseases modelling group. Candidates are expected to take the lead in improving next generation of models for environmental viral diseases (which can have a role as either airborne or water-borne diseases). The conditions for enrolment are detailed below:
DESCRIPTION AND MAIN DUTIES OF THE POSITIONS:
Two-year (1+1) post-doctoral contract for developing and improving mathematical models for waterborne and airborne diseases, in the framework of a recently funded European project and from funds from a Private Foundation. The candidate will set up a line of research in dynamical models for viral diseases in air (studying locations distributed worldwide) and in water estuaries in Europe, South America and the US. Flexibility in travelling to those places is a requirement. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the CFU of the institute, which takes the lead in the generation of climate projections at the seasonal-to-decadal timescales.
REQUIREMENTS:
Skill and demonstrated ability and experience in building, calibration and validation of mathematical models (ODE,…), especially for viral diseases. Knowledge of wave-diffusion models and underlying physics will be valued. Experience in handling large databases and in programming languages needed for writing scripts, and proven skills in advanced statistics and computing are required. Capacity to write proposals, manuscripts and to work with other colleagues in a highly collaborative environment will be valued.
REMUNERATION: Salary will be commensurate with Spanish standards for postdoctoral contracts. Possibility of extending the contract beyond the two years will be considered on the basis of exceptional achievements (tenure-track possibilities may be considered only after evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute).
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Two years (1+1), renewable.
STARTING DATE: The position starts preferably during the first quarter of 2010, or as soon as possible when filled, after that date.
