Description

A postdoctoral position in axon guidance is now available in the
laboratory of Associate Professor Geoffrey Goodhill
(http://cns.qbi.uq.edu.au) at the Queensland Brain Institute,
University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Our aim is to
understand how axons detect molecular gradients (recently reviewed by
us in Trends Neurosci, 31:90-98, 2008) using a combination of
experimental and theoretical analysis. The present position is for
experimental work using various in vitro assays, including one we
recently introduced (Rosoff et al, Nat. Neurosci., 7:678-682, 2004).
Currently we are using the response of dorsal root ganglia to
gradients of Nerve Growth Factor as a model system, though we are also
expanding to other tissues and axon guidance factors, including
gradients of Netrins, Slits and Semaphorins.

The Queensland Brain Institute (http://qbi.uq.edu.au) is based in a
new AU$63 million state-of-the-art facility and houses 24 Principal
Investigators with strong international reputations. It is one of the
largest neuroscience institutes in the world dedicated to
understanding the mechanisms underlying brain function. Brisbane is a
cosmopolitan city of 2 million people providing a vibrant cultural
environment, a subtropical climate, and easy access to unspoilt
beaches, rainforests, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Applicants must possess a PhD in a relevant field and have a strong
knowledge of neuronal biology. A background in developmental
neuroscience, particularly axon guidance, would also be desirable.
The position is for 1-year initially, but with the expectation of
renewal contingent on funding and performance. The salary range is
AU$58,632-62,938 per year, plus employer superannuation contribution
of 17%.
