Description:

Postdoctoral position at the Institute for Microbiology and Archaeal Centre, University of Regensburg

We are currently searching for an excellently qualified young scientist on the postdoctoral level to join the DARCLIFE project team funded by the European Research Council. This project has been funded for three years. DARCLIFE will seek to unravel the function and distribution of uncultured Archaea in marine subsurface sediments. Please consult the following publications for more information (Lipp et al., 2008, Nature 454, 999; Biddle et al., 2006, PNAS 103, 3846). Principal investigative strategies include lipid biomarker research, large scale cultivation of Archaea, and ecology of Archaea in the environment.

We are searching for individuals who match the following profile

Large scale fermentations, cultivation of extremophilic microbes, molecular techniques for the detection of microorganisms in the environment.

The successful candidate should have a solid background in microbiology especially in cultivation techniques and molecular microbiology. He will conduct experiments for structural and isotopic analysis of lipid biomarkers done in Bremen. Experience in large scale fermentations would be of advantage. The successful candidate will interact – via research stays – closely with Prof. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs at Marum at the University of Bremen.

Successful candidates should have recently received a PhD or equivalent degree in the life or physical sciences. The contract duration for the candidate is negotiable with maximum duration of 3 years. Excellent knowledge in English, both in speaking and writing, is a requirement. Salary and benefits are linked to the German employee scale TVL. International candidates are highly encouraged to apply. Applications should include a CV, list of publications, a short (1-page max.) synopsis of previous research achievements and research plans, and the names of at least two referees.

Contact:

Applications and inquiries should be sent electronically to Prof. Dr. Michael Thomm (michael.thomm@biologie.uni-regensburg.de). Applications will be reviewed until the positions are filled.

As the University of Regensburg intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to disabled persons.
