Description

The Biofuel Challenge—Making Clean, Green, Renewable Energy aCost-Effective Reality
In the fight against global warming, the need to develop clean, green, and renewable sources of energy has become an international call toaction. The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), a newly established U.S.Department of Energy Bioenergy Research Center, is responding byassembling an outstanding team of bioenergy scientists and researchersto meet the challenge.
JBEI is a multi-organizational research center that comprisesworld-class resources and expertise in one facility, which is located inEmeryville, California. The goal of JBEI is to use rapidly advancingscientific techniques, such as systems and synthetic biology, toaccelerate the development of the nation’s biofuels industry. JBEI ismanaged by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with partner employeesfrom five internationally recognized scientific institutions: SandiaNational Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, theUniversity of California at Davis, the University of California atBerkeley, and the Carnegie Institution for Science.
Sandians working at JBEI’s Emeryville facility are essential partners inthis aggressive bioenergy effort and will provide the technicalexpertise needed to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effectivebiofuels on a commercial scale.

Job Description

As a Sandia employee at JBEI, this postdoctoral appointee will work inthe field of metabolic-network modeling. This scientist will beresponsible for developing new computational methods and using existingretrosynthesis and reaction-kinetics tools to infer and design metabolicnetworks involved in the production of specific chemicals (e.g., fuels, fuel additives, and fine chemicals).

Required and Desired Qualifications
This position requires experience in metabolic-networks inference and/ordynamics, as well as a Ph.D. in biology, computer science, or a physicalscience. Other required qualifications include (1) experience withmachine learning, as demonstrated though publications; (2) excellentprogramming skills (C, C++, Perl); (3) proven experience withscientific-journal and grant-proposal writing; (4) strong collaborativeskills and the ability to work and communicate in a team environmentthat includes molecular biologists, biochemists, chemical engineers, andspectroscopists; and (5) a demonstrated ability to conduct research independently

A strong interest in interdisciplinary research is highly desirable, asis a specific interest in one or more of the following areas:retrosynthesis, enzyme kinetics, flux balance analysis, isotopomermodeling, and kinetics model parameterization.
