Description

Postdoctoral Fellowships
Ryerson University
Physics Department

Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Fellow positions in biomedicalphotoacoustic imaging and acoustic microscopy in the Department ofPhysics at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada (www.ryerson.ca). Thesepositions are available for a one‐year term (renewable) beginning March1st 2008 and are attached to a recent Canada Foundation for InnovationInfrastructure Project that funded the Advanced biomedical ultrasoundimaging and spectroscopy laboratory: from 1 to 1000MHz.

The first postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for carrying outresearch in biomedical photoacoustics utilizing hybrid ultrasound /photoacoustic imaging systems. The applications will have an emphasis onmolecular imaging. The fellow will have access to state of the artfacilities for the measurement of optical and acoustical properties oftissues and biomaterials, the measurement of their Grüneisencoefficient, and several laboratory based and commercial systems (suchas the Imagio, the first commercial photoacoustic small animal imaging system).

The second fellow will work on quantitative acoustic microscopy. Using arecently acquired scanning acoustic microscope that allows simultaneousoptical and GHz acoustical imaging (SASAM, Fraunhofer IBMT, Germany),algorithms will be developed to extract the mechanical properties ofcells and how these are related to cell structural changes as detectedby optical fluorescent microscopy. Moreover, the fellow will work on thedevelopment of acoustical intracellular probes.

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in biomedicalphotoacoustics or acoustic microscopy. Ryerson University is locatedwithin the within what City of Toronto has designated as the “DiscoveryDistrict”, home to seven world‐renowned hospitals and more than 30specialized medical and related sciences research centers. The Ryersoncampus is ideally located in the centre of one of the world’s mostdynamic and cosmopolitan cities.
