Description

Three postdoctoral fellow positions are available immediately toinvestigate natural product biosynthesis in medicinal plants. Theproject is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering ResearchCouncil of Canada (NSERC) and involves the use of state-of-the-artfunctional genomics and metabolomics technologies to dissectbiosynthetic pathways leading to pharmaceutical alkaloids andterpenoids.

Two positions involve the use of advanced molecular biology to discoverkey enzymes, whereas the third focuses on novel LC-MS/MS approaches toanalyze plant metabolites.

We seek highly motivated individuals with experience in plant genomics, molecular biology and biochemistry, or the mass spectrometric analysisof complex organic compounds. Basic skills for the functional genomicspositions should include the ability to work with expressed sequence tagdatabases, assemble plasmid vectors, produce recombinant enzymes inheterologous hosts and purify proteins.

The metabolomics position requires experience in biological samplepreparation and analysis by LC-MS/MS, preferably including informationdependent, high resolution data acquisition and interpretationprocedures. Knowledge of plant secondary metabolism, including alkaloidand terpenoid biosynthesis, is an asset. Candidates should possess goodwritten and verbal English skills, be able to work independently, andfunction well as part of an interactive group.

One successful candidate will be located in the Facchini Laboratory atthe University of Calgary (www.ucalgary.ca), another will work in thePage Laboratory at the National Research Council – Plant BiotechnologyInstitute (NRC-PBI) (www.pbi.nrc.ca/en/pbi.htm) in Saskatoon. Thesuccessful metabolomics candidate will work in the mass spectrometrylaboratory at NRC-PBI in Saskatoon. Both the University of Calgary andNRC-PBI offer cutting-edge facilities for plant biology research andvibrant research communities. Initial appointments will be for one yearand are renewable for a total of three years at an annual salary of $42,000.

Contact

Applicants should send a letter stating the position they are applyingfor and outlining their research interests and career plans, a CV andthe names of three references to either Dr. Jon Page(jon.page@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca) or Dr. Peter Facchini (pfacchin@ucalgary.ca).
