Job Summary

Lead a small group of people in Cambridge/Andover within the Tissue Repair Department of Discovery to identify, validate and characterize new drug delivery vehicles. Provide scientific direction and expertise for the identification of new delivery vehicles for therapeutics in the bone, tendon, cartilage and muscle repair/regeneration research programs. Also work with various other groups in Tissue Repair and Discovery groups and Biopharma groups to identify, optimize and evaluate lead compound/delivery combinations. Develop scientific credentials through publications and presentations.

Job Responsibilities

- Obtain, develop and optimize new delivery vehicles for lead compounds.
- Evaluate and characterize compound/delivery vehicles in vitro and in vivo.
- Demonstrate special skills and knowledge into a particular research project as evidenced by proven successes at the bench providing expert opinion within the Division in their specific area of research.
- Bring new and improved procedures to the laboratory, and to broaden understanding of disciplines outside area of training.
- Identify and develop solutions to key problems within assigned areas. Contribute to the discovery of new products through the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field.
- Conduct several complex experiments in parallel.
- Demonstrate a high level of initiative in performing experiments, particularly when problems are encountered which require troubleshooting.
- Consistently demonstrate scientific curiosity through reading and talking to colleagues and understand new scientific literature with particular insight, as proven by design, implementation, and interpretation, of results of novel experiments.
- Using developed communication skills, both written and verbal, disseminate complex scientific issues to a diverse audience.
- Exhibit exceptional professional maturity as exemplified by encouraging career development for staff, promoting interaction within and outside of group, attending management classes.
- Train, mentor and supervise scientific staff in laboratory techniques and overall performance.
- Demonstrate continued productivity as measured by scientific milestones such as publications and/or patents; present original research at internal seminars and external scientific meetings; be an active member of a professional society. Also, present results of independent experiments at section meetings; write reports for internal communications; complete scientific papers for peered review journals.
- Take an active role as a team member in discovery and/or development projects; serve as a mentor and resource to team members; serve as a team leader/champion of a program(s) as requested.
- Coordinate internal activities related to an alliance and serve as a liaison to the external party(s) in the alliance as requested.

Basic Qualifications

- A Ph.D. is required and a major in tissue engineering, bioengineering, material science, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology or a related science to musculoskeletal biology is preferred.
- At least 8 years of relevant postdoc research work experience. Research work related to tissue engineering or biomaterials techniques in the areas of tissue repair and/or musculoskeletal (bone, cartilage, tendon and/or muscle) biology in an academic/medical and/or pharmaceutical/biotechnology environment is preferred.
- At least 3 years of relevant research experience working in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry preferred.
- Postdoctoral training and/or work experience in biomaterials, protein delivery methods and/or bioengineering.
- Understanding of small molecule and biotherapeutic drug discovery and development.
- Strong leadership, management, communication and collaboration skills.
- A strong record of publications and presentations.
