A post-doctoral fellowship is available in the department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the University of Texas, Health Sciences Center (UTHSC)-Houston starting in September, 2010. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake one of the following research projects:
1. Developing and studying Drosophila models of human neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases.
2. Identification of novel pathways regulating innate immunity with particular emphasis on the interactions between the nervous and immune systems using Drosophila as a model organism.
3. Understanding the mechanisms regulating growth and developmental timing using Drosophila as a model organism.
The laboratory uses a cellular, biochemical and genetic approaches to tackle fundamental problems in neurobiology. Additionally, the department boasts a variety of state-of-the-art core facilities including an imaging suite and high-throughput center. A recent paper from the PI is: Venkatachalam et al. (2008) Motor deficit in a Drosophila model of mucolipidosis type IV due to defective clearance of apoptotic cells Cell 135, 838-851.
Applicants should be highly motivated and creative. Although a PhD in cell biology or a related field such as biochemistry or molecular biology is required, prior experience with Drosophila is NOT a pre-requisite for the position. Good command of the English language and excellent communication skills are essential.
