Algenetix is developing transgenic solutions that address the challenges of industrial-scale algae cultivation. The company has a strong patent portfolio and recently closed its first round of financing. The company is incorporated in the U.S. and has many ties to San Diego, but R&D will be incubated in New Zealand for at least the first year. The area offers spectacular outdoor and marine recreation opportunities.
The position involves adapting validated oil-related genetic technologies to algae. Following this one year project, the ideal candidate will have the talent and drive needed to grow rapidly alongside the company. In addition to the oil production platform, the company has developed a pipeline of product concepts that address the challenges of algae growth, harvesting and oil extraction.
The relevant qualifications are practical experience in algal genetics or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience culturing and transforming species such as Chlamydomonas or Dunaliella. Routine vector construction will be out-sourced where possible to a DNA synthesis company and many of the oil-related assays (FAME-GC/MS) are in place. Skills in genetic and biochemical techniques such as RT-PCR, Southern and Western blots are important, with a demonstrated history of good hands in the lab essential. Relentless troubleshooting of laboratory problems is a key competency.
