In the past decade the scale of genotyping and genetic association studies has increased rapidly from single locus analysis to genome-wide association (GWA) studies that allow the screening of 500,000-1,000,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), covering 65-95% of the human genome. GWA studies thus suffer from multiple testing and it has proven difficult to identify genes of small effect for complex traits such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depression or schizophrenia. Pathway or functional gene group analysis may address this problem. In addition, risk prediction based on GWAS data has been proposed and integration with information from functional gene group analysis may improve current risk prediction algorithms.
A second problem this project may address is when GWA data is linked to multiple phenotypes, such as voxel-based brain volume data, where 1,000,000 SNPs are to be associated with 400,000 voxels. Sophisticated methods need to be developed to efficiently analyse such datasets.
We are looking for candidates with a PhD in statistics, mathematics, genetics or bioinformatics. Programming experience is strongly preferred. Candidates should have an interest in statistical modelling and genetics, and a strong motivation to pursue a career in science.
