Description

3 Year Postdoctoral Fellowship On Regulation Of Cholesterol Metabolism By The E3-Ubiquitin Ligase Idol (Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam)

Cholesterol metabolism is tightly regulated both at the cellular as well as whole-organism level. This regulation ensures that the level of cholesterol does not increase to toxic levels and that sufficient cholesterol is available for processes requiring it. Disruption of this balance is associated with several pathological conditions in humans, most notably cardiovascular disease.

Our group is broadly interested in the (transcriptional) regulation of metabolism and the specific role of the ubiquitin system here in. This project centers on a novel pathway we recently identified for controlling cholesterol metabolism through action of the E3-ubiquitin ligase IDOL (Zelcer et al., Science 2009). Using a combination of proteomics, biochemistry, molecular biology and animal studies, we aim to further elucidate this pathway both at the mechanistic level as well as to study its contribution to cholesterol homeostasis in vivo. Furthermore we are interested to characterize other novel genes with potential metabolic roles as well as to globally address the role of ubiquitin in metabolic processes.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a PhD in Medical Biology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, or in a related field. Working experience in the fields of metabolism or ubiqiutin is an advantage. The candidate should have a proven published track record and should have good command of oral and written English. Interested candidates should send a cover letter describing their professional interests as well as career goals, a C.V, and the names and contact information of at least three references to
