Description
A post doctoral position available beginning Fall of 2009 to study the effects of novel anti-inflammatory agents on amyloid burden, neuronal damage, and inflammation in transgenic mouse models of AD. We are interested to determine if treatment with novel thiazolidinediones, or with drugs which raise central catecholamine levels, will have beneficial effects in a novel line of PS:APP mice which normally develop plaques at 4-6 weeks. Experience with immunocytochemical methodologies, analysis of amyloid plaque burden, and of APP proteins and fragments is requisite. Studies will include analysis of changes in brain gene expression, HPLC for measures of brain catecholamine levels, behavioral testing including Morris water maze and y-maze, and in vitro studies using primary neurons and cell lines to examine regulation of protease expression and inflammatory gene expression.
The research project has strong translational and clinical potential, and possibilities exist to initiate pilot testing with colleagues in the Departments of Neurology. Broad knowledge and adequate laboratory experience in this field, good command of spoken and written English and excellent communication and team skills are required. Priority will be given to candidates with a strong expertise in amyloid biology, TgAPP mice, and inflammatory signaling pathways.
