Description
An NIH-funded post-doctoral position is available immediately to studythe role of angiogenesis in skeletal muscle, with an emphasis ontranslating results to human peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Thefocus of the laboratory is on understanding the role of endothelialreceptor tyrosine kinases (VEGF receptors and Tie receptors) and theirligands in the regulation of skeletal muscle angiogenesis and myofiberphenotypic switching during physiological and pathological processes,such as exercise and ischemia. Studies will investigate the crosstalkbetween endothelial cells and myocytes in skeletal muscle tissue.Approaches include the use of transgenic and knockout mice subjected tovoluntary exercise or hind limb ischemia; analysis of culturedendothelial and skeletal muscle cells in vitro; use of adenovirus,adeno-associated virus, or retrovirus to express genes of interest;immunofluorescence staining to analyze capillary density and myofiberphenotype in muscle; and analysis of changes in oxidative metabolism andphysiological function of muscle.
The applicant should have a solid background in molecular biologytechniques and ideally should have experience working with mouse models.Additionally, experience in either angiogenesis or skeletal musclebiology is desirable.
