Description

An opportunity currently exists for a highly motivated PostdoctoralResearch Fellow to provide scientific leadership within a large, internationally recognised research group investigating the role of thepathogenic bacterium Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis inJohne’s disease. The Faculty of Veterinary Science conducts research andteaching programs in farm animal health and production. A significantresearch initiative between Meat and Livestock Australia and theUniversity has targeted new approaches for diagnosis and control ofJohne’s disease, which is an internationally significant problem inlivestock and may be linked to Crohn’s disease in man. Several newdiagnostic approaches have been developed and the research program isnow extending into a validation phase.

A position exists for a self-motivated and innovative researcher to jointhe Johne’s disease research program. The successful applicant will workwithin a collaborative team that includes Professor Richard Whittington,Dr Michelle Dennis, Dr Kumi deSilva, Dr Douglas Begg and Dr KarrenPlain. The position is based at Camden, which is located on the fringeof the Sydney metropolitan area. The region retains its rural heritageand relaxed lifestyle while providing urban facilities and low-costaccommodation. The campus is about one hour’s drive from the heart of Sydney.

In this exciting research program we are developing increasedunderstanding of the interaction between Mptb and the host byidentifying genes in the bacterium and the host which could be used forearly diagnosis of infection or to define resistant, recovered orinfected animals. You will utilise molecular biological approaches toanalyse the bacterial-host cell interaction, characterise the genesinvolved and develop new diagnostic and preventative approaches.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in molecular biology anddemonstrated expertise with molecular biological techniques such asmRNA/DNA isolation, cloning and expression, PCR and RT-PCR andbioinformatics. Well developed oral and written communication skills, including computer literacy and data management; experience withresearch, reporting and scientific publication and the ability to workcooperatively with others are essential. Experience with microbiology, microarrays or subtractive hybridisation approaches and approaches tothe study of intracellular bacteria are desirable criteria.
