Description

The transformation of epithelial cells results in the formation of alocalized tumor. Some tumors become invasive and metastatic bytransiently activating embryonic program called epithelial mesenchymaltransition (EMT). Tumor cells that underwent EMT appear mesenchymal andbecome highly migratory and invasive. Several transcription factorsregulate EMT process including FOXC2, Twist, Snail, Goosecoid, Slug& SIP1. We found that inhibiting the expression of FOXC2 (Mani &Yang et al., PNAS, 2007) or Twist (Yang & Mani et al., Cell, 2004)in highly metastatic cells completely suppressed their metastaticability. Strikingly, these cells that underwent EMT also exhibitproperties of stem cells (Mani et al, Cell, in press). These findingsillustrate the importance of EMT and the transcription factors thatregulate EMT in cancer metastasis.

Our laboratory is interested in understanding the role that a number ofthese transcription factors play during cancer metastases. We use avariety of in vitro and in vivo tumor models and tissue specificinducible transgenic mouse models to study the role of EMT in cancer metastasis.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals to study the role ofnumber of these transcription factors during the cancer metastases.Bright and independent individuals with a Ph.D. in any area ofbiomedical science are encouraged to apply. In addition, experience incancer cell biology, developmental biology or stem cells will be a pluspoint. A competitive salary and an excellent work environment will beprovided.
