Description
A postdoctoral position is available in the McCaffrey. The McCaffreylaboratory works on microRNA profiling in human disease, therapeuticRNAi for the treatment of hepatitis B virus and rational design ofzinc-finger nucleases for cutting viral DNAs in mammalian cells.
The applicant should have expertise and a strong publication record inthe any or all of the following areas: microRNA expression profiling,computational or empirical identification of microRNA target mRNAs, RNAinterference, zinc-finger nucleases, cell culture, viral vectors andbioinformatics. This position requires the ability to thinkindependently, design innovative experiments with adequate controls andthe ability to successfully obtain external fellowship support withinthe first year. Strong written and verbal skills are also required.
The McCaffrey laboratory is in new laboratory space in the Department ofInternal Medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. TheUniversity of Iowa has numerous faculty members who are world leaders inthe areas of RNAi and Gene Therapy. It is one of three regional GeneTherapy Centers in the United States and is an NCI Cancer Center. TheUniversity of Iowa has an outstanding medical school and the McCaffreylaboratory has several collaborations with clinicians interested intranslational research.
Last year the Scientist Magazine voted the University of Iowa the bestuniversity in North America for postdocs. Iowa City is a progressivecommunity that is frequently voted one of the most livable cities in theUnited States and it has the third highest per capita Ph.Ds in theUnited States. The schools are excellent, it is very family friendly andhousing is reasonably affordable. Iowa City is 3 ½ hours drive fromChicago and 15 minutes from the Eastern Iowa Airport. The city offers anarray of cultural and athletic events including national theater,symphony performances, international art exhibits and big 10 athletic events.
