Description
Research being conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canadaresearch centre in London Ontario is evaluating the abundance andcharacteristics of enteric indicator and pathogenic bacteria shed bylivestock into the farm and broader environment.
Successful candidates will be part of a large research team employingconventional and molecular methods to evaluate microbial water qualitywith respect to risk to human health.
One emphasis concerns the basis for environmental fitness of entericbacteria in secondary habitats [stored manure, soil, water], andrelationship to antibiotic resistance and virulence potential.
A second emphasis concerns the elucidation of the relative role ofagriculture versus other sources of fecal pollution in mixed activitywatersheds. Microbial Source Tracking methods are being deployed to this end.
