We are requesting applications for a postdoctoral research position fora functional polymer membrane design project. The position requiresbackground and expertise in polymer/monomer synthesis.
The research is a combined project involving Prof. Douglas Gin in theChemistry & Biochemistry Dept. and Prof. Richard Noble in theChemical & Biological Engineering Dept. at the University ofColorado, Boulder.
The objectives of this project are to fabricate new membrane structuresbased on ionic liquid/polymer and polymerizable ionic liquids; andcharacterize their fundamental gas, liquid and vapor transportproperties. The polymer phase can contain a lyotropic liquid crystal(LLC) that can form ordered porous nanostructures and incorporate theionic liquid into the hydrophilic regions.
The research plan has several elements.
The basic physical properties of these LLC-ionic liquid nanocompositematerials are not well understood. The approach is to first evaluate thebulk liquids to determine their basic physical properties. Thesematerials can then be polymerized to study their performance incomparison with the bulk liquids. Finally, nanocomposite materials willbe fabricated and evaluated that can incorporate the properties of eachcomponent as well as the effect of the morphological structure. Filmfabrication will incorporate the ionic liquids into polymer matricessuch as lyotropic liquid crystal networks to produce stable thin films,as well as form polymerizable ionic liquids that can also be fabricatedinto stable thin films.
