Doctoral student/Post-Doc (Aalto CHEM, Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology)
Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The university's ambitious goal is to rank among the top universities in the world in its areas of specialization. At Aalto there are 20,000 students with around 75,000 alumni. We have a staff of 5,000 including 350 professors.

Aalto University School of Chemical Technology is currently looking for target oriented persons to be hired for a fixed term

1) Post-Doc position on Modeling of reaction kinetics and chemical reactors
2) Doctoral or Post-Doc position on Microchannel reactors

Our profile:
The Industrial Chemistry group in the Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology (directed by Prof. Juha Lehtonen) has a strong background in chemical reaction engineering, especially in heterogeneous catalytic reactions. The research group of Industrial chemistry consists of approximately 15 researchers at postgraduate or postdoctoral level in their careers. In addition, the group employs annually several undergraduate students as research assistants, as master’s thesis workers and as summer trainees. Traditionally, the majority of research topics have related to investigation of catalytic processes of oil refining, but now the emphasis has shifted more to renewable energy sources and green chemistry, e.g. production of fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks. Current research projects are financed by e.g. Tekes, Academy of Finland and industry and related to e.g. hydrodeoxygenation, catalytic hydrogenation and reforming reactions, gasification gas clean-up, production of furanic compounds from hemicellulose, catalyst development by atomic layer deposition technique and transient kinetics.

Your profile:
You have received an excellent master’s/doctoral degree (or equivalent) in chemical reaction engineering or a related field such as chemical engineering. Interest in interdisciplinary cooperation and good communication skills are required. Experience in modeling and knowledge of Matlab and/or Fortran as well as of microreactors (position on Microchannel reactors) complete your profile.

Your duties & responsibilities:

Modeling of reaction kinetics and chemical reactors:

You’ll contribute to several projects of our group providing your modeling expertise. Your duties comprise modeling of complex systems and you are expected to bring new interesting scientific openings to our projects in the field of modeling.
Furthermore, you’ll contribute to lectures, software development and other duties within this chair.

Microchannel reactors:
You’ll work in the microchannel reactor project financed by Academy of Finland. Your duties comprise the investigation of multi-phase flow patterns in microchannels as well as reactor modeling and kinetic modeling of reaction systems to be investigated in microreactors.
Furthermore, you contribute to lectures and other duties within this chair.

Our offer:
The positions are to be filled as soon as possible and are for a fixed term of 12 months. A renewal is possible. If a person with no PhD is chosen for the position he or she has an opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree. Salary is according to the new salary system of universities but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
For additional information, please contact Professor Juha Lehtonen, e-mail: firstname.lastname@aalto.fi
The application materials for the positions should include at least an application, a curriculum vitae and names and contact details of possible references. Applicants with a PhD or equivalent degree should attach a publication list. PhD students should attach a study record.

The applications should be sent to Aalto University registry no later than September 30th, 2012 preferably by e-mail in one pdf-document to the address kirjaamo@aalto.fi. The street address of the Registry is Otakaari 1, Espoo (Registry closes at 3.00 p.m.) The postal address is Aalto University, P.O. Box 11000, FI-00076 Aalto.
