POST-DOCTORAL TRAINING FELLOWSHIP

Applications are invited for a post doctoral training fellowship to workin Mike Bevan’s group on a project to define new components in a cellwall signalling pathway that we have recently identified (Li et al ThePlant Cell 19: 2500-2515). This pathway, defined by the hsr8 mutation, modulates the extent and composition of plant cell walls in response toavailable carbohydrates and other cues. The research involves geneticscreens to identify mutants suppressing the hsr8 sugar-responsephenotype, and characterisation of the genes identified. Other putativeregulatory genes will be studied using microarray analysis andbiochemistry. The effects of mutations on cell wall composition andphysical properties will be studied in collaboration with Dr Paul Dupreein Cambridge.

Candidates should have a PhD in genetics, biochemistry, or molecularbiology; preferably in a plant model system such as Arabidopsis or rice. You should be able to work independently and creatively and have theability to write scientific papers. Some travel to internationalconferences will be required. The ability to work collaboratively in ateam environment and supervise students is essential.

The skills the post holder will expect to gain by the end of thePost-doctoral Training Fellowship include comprehensive training inArabidopsis genetics, molecular biology and physiology, cell wallbiochemistry and analysis, genome bioinformatics, microarray analysis, experimental design, statistics and data representation, givingpresentations, and experience of writing papers and grant applications. The post-holder will interact with a wider scientific community workingon bio energy crops and so will learn about the strategic relevance andpotential applications of their work.

The post holder will also receive professional development trainingadditional to that usually available to post-doctoral workers.

Due to the specific training involved, applicants should have less than3 years post-doctoral experience.
