Description

Doctoral Training Centre Studentships.
MRes/PhD Studentships in Theoretical and Experimental Approaches tounderstanding Biological Complexity.

Entry September 2008/Tax free stipend £16,405p.a.

The first year combines formal teaching and research and leads to an MRes.

This is followed by the PhD project in years 2-4. A wide range ofresearch topics are available including:

• Mathematical modelling of molecular evolution, evolutionary genomics, gene and metabolic networks, cancer biology and immunology.
• Bio and neuro Informatics
• Biophysics of vascular fluid mechanics, hearing and ion channels
• Imaging, optical and scanning probe approaches to nanoscale bioscience.
• Systems Biology

The four-year interdisciplinary MRes/PhD programme run by CoMPLEX trainsstudents to work at the interface between mathematics, engineering, physics and the life sciences. In this integrated programme, the firstyear is an MRes year during which students are trained in bothmathematical modelling and advanced experimental techniques. Studentsalso attend undergraduates lecture courses to strengthen their knowledgeof mathematics (if their background is mainly in biology) or biology (ifthey have a background in the physical sciences or mathematics). Withthis training students emerge to pursue interdisciplinary PhD researchin a wide range of areas. A requirement of the programme is that allstudents have two supervisors, one from the life sciences and one fromthe physical sciences. With a very wide range of departments andresearch groups involved at UCL there is plenty of choice and CoMPLEXprovides a key focal point for communication between groups, both tostrengthen existing collaborations and to promote the development of new ones.

Entry September 2008
Applicants must have or expect a good II(i) or 1st class degree in anyarea of the mathematical, physical, computer, engineering or lifesciences. Funding is available for up to 12 UK ‘home’ and EU studentswith a tax-free stipend of £16,405 p.a.
