Title : MICROMECHANICAL STUDY OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN CADHERINS AND INTEGRINS
The issue is to understand how cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesive contacts are coupled to modulate the cell adhesion status and its mechanical properties. Using a panel of complementary micromechanical tools (optical tweezers, cell uniaxial stretching, micropatterned adhesive substrates) and visualization techniques, together with molecular biology tools, the project will consist in studying the mechanisms responsible for the growth or for the disruption of intercellular contacts mediated by cadherins. It will especially focus on the structural changes and rigidity variations of these intercellular contacts, induced by a controlled modulation of the density and of the spatial distribution of adhesive cell-matrix contacts. The reciprocal crosstalk (perturbation of cell-matrix contact due to intercellular adhesion) will also be considered. The work will be held in collaboration with a group of biologists at Institut Curie (Paris). The project is granted by the program “Physique et Chimie du Vivant” of the French Agence Nationale de La Recherche.
Candidates are expected to have a high level background in physics/biophysics, to be enthusiastic and motivated for a collaborative experimental work associating physicists and biologists. Ideally, they should have experienced research in the domain of cell adhesion, cytoskeleton structure and mechanical properties.
