Description

The New Jersey Center for Biomaterials is recruiting outstanding candidates for an NIH-supported Postdoctoral Training Program in Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Science. The program offers interdisciplinary training, ranging from design and synthesis of new biomaterials, materials characterization and processing, and cell biology, to the engineering of prototype implants and their testing in clinically relevant animal models. Previous exposure to one or more of these techniques is highly desirable. Operating from a home laboratory, each trainee may complete rotations in other laboratories and facilities of the Center as determined by the trainee's research topic. In addition, each trainee has the opportunity to work with one of the Center's industrial-academic teams. Program-wide seminars provide interaction among trainees and the program faculty. Supplementary education for professional development may include medical/scientific ethics, regulatory affairs, funding, patent law, business development, and communication skills.

All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Applications from underrepresented minority individuals are strongly encouraged.

This two-year training program is based on the model of graduate medical education and is open to PhD, MD, DVM and DDS graduates. All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Candidates having science backgrounds will be selected on the basis of merit of previous research work, its relevance to tissue-engineering disciplines, and intellectual maturity, as evidenced through both publications and presentations. Candidates having a clinical background will be selected using well-established procedures for resident selection and many of the above criteria for scientific trainees, recognizing that clinical trainees will not have had opportunities to carry out major research projects. Priority will be given to candidates who have been published in a major scientific journal. Additional criteria that will be applied to both clinical and science candidates are ability to work in a team environment, degree of motivation, and ability to communicate effectively.
