Description

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, has an opening for an Assistant Professor (tenure track, nine-month appointment) starting July 1, 2008, subject to budgetary approval. Applications are sought from outstanding individuals whose research focuses on modern microbiology. Candidates may work with a broad range of viruses and microbes, including Bacteria, Archaea, or Eukarya (such as, fungi, oomycetes or protozoa), that may be either free-living or associated with other organisms. We are seeking candidates who use novel or innovative approaches to address microbiology-related questions using model organisms or comparative biology. Applications are welcome from researchers employing a variety of approaches, for example, physiology, cell biology, development or ecology, as studied by biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, genomics, and computational biology. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory, undergraduate microbiology and microbiology laboratory, as well as graduate microbiology. The successful candidate, who will hold a faculty position in the University of California as well as an appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station, is expected to establish a strong and independent research program. Microbial biology is a growing program on the Berkeley campus; expertise in this department (and elsewhere on campus) offers unique collaborative potential in microbial physiology, genetics, genomics, pathology, ecology and evolution. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree and suitable postdoctoral or academic experience. A curriculum vitae, a statement of current and future research interests, a statement on teaching (including experience and teaching philosophy) and three letters of reference should be sent by November 30, 2007 to:
