Description

An exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow has arisen in the recently established Neuroplasticity and Disease group of the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre. You will be involved in the cellular and molecular analysis of the short- and long-term response of axons and synaptic boutons upon cortical injuries. Our previous data pointing to unsuspected plasticity of presynaptic sites (De Paola et al, 2003, Nature Neur. 6, 491-500; De Paola et al. 2006, Neuron 49, 861-875) raise the questions of whether, when, and to what degree synaptic dynamics are affected in frequent brain disorders. The project will
involve using an in vivo 2-photon molecular imaging approach together with behavioral essays and a range of experimental skills in molecular and cell biology, e.g. DNA electroporation, confocal microscopy, immunocytochemistry and fixed tissue anatomy. The aim is to advance our knowledge of cortical plasticity and its relevance to neuropathological processes by defining the molecular basis and functional roles of synaptic structural dynamics (for more information: http://www.csc.mrc.ac.uk/ResearchGroups/NeuroplasticityAndDisease/).

This post is a Career Development Fellowship to support post-doctoral scientists in early or changed career training and help establish them as a successful research scientist in their chosen field. The Clinical Sciences Centre (CSC) is an institute funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and is a Division of the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London which
provides a thriving research environment and has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Applicants should have a PhD degree in Molecular or Cell Biology or a closely related discipline, preferably with a sound background in the cell biology of the neuron. We are looking for motivated candidates with strong knowledge in molecular or cell biology and/or live imaging. Experimental skills in protein trafficking or in the analysis of mouse behavior will be an advantage.
