Description

Situated in Martinsried, south-west of Munich, Germany, the MPIB (Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry) is one of the largest institutes within the Max Planck Society’s biomedical section, supporting 10 departments.
The department of Structural Biology is particularly active in the field of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) developing technology and methodology and their application to relevant biological problems to study molecular and cellular structures. We are using a wide range of biophysical methods and we equipped with state of the art facilities, including several high-end transmission electron microscopes. One of the latest generation TEMs, the FEI TITAN KRIOS (80-300kV) will be installed shortly and this instrument, equipped with a 8k CCD camera (TVIPS) will serve as a tool to establish a high-throughput acquisition pipeline for single particle investigations.
We wish to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow in cryo-EM to carry out an independent research project utilizing this microscope platform. Integrated into the research environment of the department of Structural Biology the candidate should interact with the FEI R&D department to exploit the full potential of cryo-EM and to contribute to further developments of this system.

Candidates must have a PhD, preferably with postdoctoral experience in physics, biophysics or engineering and experience in the field of transmission electron microscopy. Understanding of the physics of imaging is mandatory. The candidate should have good team working skills, be capable of analytical and innovative thinking, should be self motivated and should have a proven track record of communicating complex technical problems.

We are offering a 2 year fellowship in the department of molecular structural Biology and within FEI Company with the possibility of extension either in the scientific or in the industrial environment.
