Job Description:

Applications are invited for the post of Post-doctoral Research Scientist in a multi-site group led by Professor Philip Goulder, based at the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research, South Parks Road, Oxford. The primary focus of the work is the HIV epidemic in subSaharan Africa, and, specifically, the epidemic in Durban. The project is todefine HLA-specific and HIV protein-specific differences in the effectiveness with which different CD8+ T cells can inhibit HIV replication.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. that has focused on molecular biology, virology and immunology of viruses, ideally HIV. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the project described; to undertake HIV replication inhibition assays involving the generation and culture of CD8+ T cell clones and peptide-specific T cells, and also the design and synthesis of peptide/MHC tetramers with which to facilitate this project. The successful candidate will have relevant experience in molecular techniques as applied to immunology (e.g. HLA typing, RT-PCR, gene expression analysis), as well as an established track record as a productive research investigator with significant first author publications in the last two years.

The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is available for two years in the first instance. This is a full-time post and the anticipated start date is 1 October 2007.
