Proposal for a Essex Bio-Technology research fellowship
Aim: To fun******** young PhD scientist (0-4 years after graduation) fora perio******** 6-18 months to do ocular surface research in Singapore.
Criteria: A PhD graduate from life-science or relate******** from areputable university outside Singapore (eg., Hong Kong university).
Quantum: Supports accommo******** transport an******** allowances inSingapore (say total of $5000-$7000 per month). The project consumableswill be funde******** by the host research institution in Singapore:which is Singapore Eye Research Institute.
Mechanism: Once approved, the opportunity for this fellowship will beadvertise******** universities as well as in announcements at variouseye conferences. A yearly closing deadline for applications will bement******** an******** email where application forms an******** can beemaile********. SERI Academy or Essex Bio-technology jointly can appointa committee to review the potential candidates for suitability. Ifnecessary, phone interviews or actual project ideas can bepresente******** further assessment. Before apply******** the candidatesshoul******** discuss the project an******** with Dr Louis Tong oranother doctor in SERI who is involve******** ocular surface research,eg., Dr Jo******** or Dr Marcus Ang.
Once the decision is made an******** successful application hasdecide******** take up the pos******** SERI HR will appoint this personas a SERI research fellow for the duration of the project an******** thecandidate to get a Singapore Employment pass through immigration.Funding can be awarde******** the applicant directly or through SERIfinance.
Backgroun******** significance: There is little exposure of generalscientists to ocular surface research compare******** areas like cancer,neurosc******** genetics an******** disease. This program will hopefullyincrease the exposure of university graduates to the ocular surfacefiel******** train scientific manpower in the area. Since thisfellowship is funde******** Essex-Biotechnology there can also be atranslational or industry attachment element which will expose thefellow to both clinical an******** science relate******** the ocularsurface. This person will therefore absorb industry experience whichwill allow him or her to progress to an industry science position aswell as a more academic career. The ocular surface research group is anexample of a group that can host such a fellow, since it is alreadyinvolve******** various types of ocular surface research, eg,translational drug stu******** clinical tr******** ******** epidemiologyetc. Dr L Tong also runs twice a week a dry eye dedicate******** whichallows the fellow more clinical exposure to real patients if necessary.
