postdoc, bioinformatics systems  biology, genomics, immune system  transcriptional and signal transduction, generation of cells, immunology programming, osaka university , japan

Description:

This position is available from April 1st, 2010 to work in the Bioinformatics and Genomics Laboratory of the Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC). The focus of the lab is on understanding the nature of the transcriptional and signal transduction programs that are involved in the generation of cells of the immune system and upon responses to infection. Despite their central importance in developmental and disease states, transcriptional programs are still poorly understood (PMID: 18838119). Only by taking an integrated (systems biology) view of the immune system will we ever be able to understand and manipulate the genetic programs and signal transduction cascades that give rise to function and allow immune cells to respond to infection. Previous work has involved the development of BloodExpress, a database and continually-updated unified resource of gene expression in mouse haematopoiesis (PMID: 18987008), which coupled with the novel technique of ChIP-sequencing, was instrumental in building the transcriptional regulatory networks controlled by the SCL transcription factor (PMID: 19346495). The integration of genome-wide epigenetic and transcription factor ChIP-seq data with computational methods for inferring transcription factor activities from expression data will be central to the lab research program.

We are seeking an enthusiastic bioinformatics postdoc for our multidisciplinary group. The ideal candidate should
——have excellent programming and web development skills, and a strong knowledge of molecular biology databases and RDBMS development.
——Experience with the R programming language, sequence analysis tools and high-throughput genomics data analysis using next generation sequencing and microarray technologies would be a distinct advantage.

The post holder will work closely with the PI to perform bioinformatic analysis of public and inhouse data with existing tools and will be a key in developing methods for the analysis, integration and visualisation of high-throughput genomic and expression data, and the resulting transcriptional networks. The post holder should have good communication skills and will be part of a growing computational biology community at IFReC.

IFReC (Director: Shizuo Akira) is a multidisciplinary elite research center of the World Premier International Research Center (WPI) program of the Japanese government (http://www.ifrec.osaka-u.ac.jp). IFReC currently hosts some of the world’s top immunologists(http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=405380§ioncode=26) and (http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/2009/090924/full/nj0260.html#whole-body-imaging-of-theimmune-system). Informal enquiries and applications CV (and three references) to (Associate Professor) Diego Miranda-Saavedra at dm435@cam.ac.uk (CCed to diego@ifrec.osaka-u.ac.jp & ifrec-office@ifrec.osaka-u.ac.jp). Initial term of employment is 3 years with a salary in the range 4.8-5.7 million yen, depending on qualifications and experience. The working language at IFReC is Englis
