CoEBio3 is an inter-University, industry supported, research centreundertaking state-of-the-art research into the development of novelbiocatalytic processes for industry. CoEBio3 is located at TheUniversity of Manchester.

As part of a major new collaboration with an industry partner we willinitiate a project with the ultimate aim of developing an integratedbioprocess for the conversion of biomass to fuel components. In order toachieve this objective it will be necessary to develop robustbiocatalysts for a range of different bioconversions. Candidate enzymes(and genes) have been identified which will need to be isolated, expressed and examined for their ability to carry out the targetbioconversion. In many cases it may be necessary to optimise thesebiocatalysts such that they possess the appropriate characteristics forapplications in industrial bioprocesses. We shall also undertake anintensive and wide-ranging screening programme to identify suitablemicro-organisms which are able to produce high levels of bio-fuelprecursor molecules.

Four individuals are required for four different but related researchareas associated with the project description above. The project willsuit highly qualified research scientists who are both technicallystrong and also have a desire to carry out research in a commerciallyimportant project area.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Nicholas Turner, Email:Nicholas.Turner@manchester.ac.uk; Dr Andrew Ellis, Email: Andrew.Ellis@manchester.ac.uk
