Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow

The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.

PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct scientific research involving lipid metabolism in liver cells using in vitro and in vivo models.

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in the field of Molecular Biology or Endocrinology.

This is a full-time, regular, exempt position.

Duties:

Characterize cellular genes that are regulated by diets, natural lipid lowering compounds, and cytokines in liver tissues, primary hepatocytes, and liver-derived cell lines;
Promoter analysis to identify critical cis-acting elements and trans-acting cofactors that play important roles in PCSK9 gene expression and regulation in liver cells;
Utilize hyperlipidemic animal models including rats, hamsters, and mice to study the in vivo regulation of PCSK9 by statin and other lipid lowering agents;
Utilizing transgenic mouse model to examine the regulation of hepatic LDLR and PCSK9 expression;
Participate in general laboratory maintenance;
Maintain detailed experimentation records in notebook and in computer files;
Participate in manuscript preparation and conference presentation.

Requirements:

Ph.D. in related scientific field;
Prior working experience with animals;
Prior working experience with transgenic mice;
Knowledge of molecular and cellular biology;
Knowledge of lab safety procedures;
Good communication skills, both in writing and speaking;
Able to present results in a laboratory meeting and at scientific conferences.
