OFFER : The Chair in Eco-advising wishes to recruit a post-doctoral fellow for a 30 month period, ending December 2014. Annual salary of 50 000$. Place of work is at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC ), Saguenay, Quebec, Canada.

RESEARCH PROJECT : Sustainable development and paper mill biosolids management: deterrents and incentives to recycling and beneficial use in the context of the fight against climate change.
This project lies within the objectives of the Plan d’action sur les matières résiduelles 2012-2020 and the Plan d’action sur les changements climatiques 2013-2020 published by Quebec’s government and specifically aims at identifying and suggesting viable solutions for the recycling of paper mill biosolids.

In Quebec, hundreds of thousands of tons of paper mill biosolids are buried in landfills or burnt (mostly without any energy gain) every year. GHG emissions caused by these practices are unknown (N2O emissions notably) and therefore are not part of the paper mill industries’, nor of the province’s, balance sheet. The low costs of landfilling in the paper mill own landfills or of burning, coupled with social acceptability issues related to spreading, are assumed to be important deterrents to an increase in beneficial use.
The Chair wants to investigate that problematic and wishes to hire a postdoctoral researcher that would be in charge of all the related research projects. The projects will be under the responsibility of Professor Claude Villeneuve.

THE CHALLENGES : This project will lead to the development of a module designed to calculate the real emissions linked to paper mill biosolids management and will be used to modify IPCC good practice guidance for the industry.

The project will be an international first for the industry and comprises many technical and human challenges.

The project touches upon all the aspects pertaining to sustainable development and will be executed by a multidisciplinary team made of fundamental sciences and social sciences researchers.

EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH INTERESTS :
The person we are looking for:
• Is a PhD graduate in industrial ecology or chemistry (related fields considered);
• Has a solid knowledge and expertise in climate change in general but more importantly in GHG emissions, knowledge of the paper mill industry is a plus;
• Is able and wishes to become part of a multidisciplinary team, in a french environment;
