Description

Two postdoctoral research associate positions are immediately available at Wayne State University School of Medicine, for work in support of the NIH-Perinatology Research Branch (nanotechnology lab) for qualified persons with significant experience in the development of animal models, and/or characterization of the efficacy of polymeric drug delivery vehicles in animal models.

One lab technician position is also available for a person with experience in areas mentioned below. The chosen person will work in the cutting-edge area of using nanostructured materials for drug delivery, applied to clinical problems. This highly inter-disciplinary project is part of a successful ongoing effort in developing tailored polymer-based nanodevices for targeted drug delivery in animal models of infection and inflammation. Extensive collaborations between the schools of engineering and medicine are key components of the project. Research experience in any or most of these areas will be a strong plus: (1) animal model development and animal handling, preferably with guinea pigs, rats, and/or rabbits; (2) tissue handling, histology and staining; (3) histological cell counting; (4) experience in animal behavioral studies (5) MRI/PET imaging (6) statistical software; (7) manuscript writing; (8) microsurgical skills and electroretinography. Some knowledge of handling cell-lines and cell-studies would be a plus, but is not required. A PhD in any area such as neuroscience, pharmaceutical science, immunology/inflammation or a related field will be considered. Since multiple positions are involved, not all but a subset of these skills/experience is expected in each person. For the technician position, a bachelor’s degree in biology or related field in expected. The research associate(s) and the technician will work primarily with Dr. Sujatha Kannan (Children’s Hospital of Michigan) and collaborate with Dr. R. M. Kannan (Chemical Engineering), and work in support of the perinatology research branch where in vivo testing will be performed. The groups have extensive polymer, in vitro and in vivo characterization facilities. The position is available immediately, and is expected to be a one-year appointment initially, with a competitive salary. The job is located in Detroit, Michigan (USA).

Duties:
(1) Animal model development for nanodevice testing
(2) Histological and related evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of drugs and nanodevices
(3) Tissue handling
(4) Statistical analysis
