Research Fellow
University of Leeds - Medicine and Health
Antivirals and Viral Oncology Group

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position funded jointly by the LTHT Charitable Trust and SJUH Hepatology Dept in the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine (LIMM) to investigate the translational output of a clinical trial assessing inhibitors of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) p7 ion channel. The work will investigate the selection of drug-resistant variants in patient p7 sequences through a combination of biochemical and virological methods, with specific focus on the effects of sequence changes on rimantadine-sensitive ion channel function. The work will be directly related to the HepRIACT patient trial (Hepatitis C Rimantadine Antiviral Combination Therapy; EudraCT:2011-002781-21; http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01413490 ), due to commence at St James’ Hospital in 2012. Applicants should have experience in the purification of recombinant viral ion channel membrane proteins (viroporins) from bacteria, HPLC methods, in vitro ion channel functional assays and virus culture, ideally under category III containment. Knowledge of molecular cloning, sequence analysis and the biophysical characterisation of ion channel complexes and their interaction with model membranes would be highly advantageous. An attention to detail is essential, together with good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The team’s work is translational and relevant to future drug development; this work may link with and inform additional future clinical trials. The post is available from April 2012 for a period of 12 months and will be based at St James’s University Hospital.

University Grade 6 (£24,520 - £29,249 p.a.) Salary offered will be dependent upon qualifications and relevant research experience but is likely that the appointment will be made at the lower end of the scale due to funding limitations.
