CEA-Cadarache Job Title:  UO2 plastic strains under mechanical loading- a TEM and XRD study

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Nuclear Fuel Behaviour Laboratory (LLCC) is based in a research centre in the south-east of France (Cadarache) and belongs to the Nuclear Energy Division of the French Atomic and Alternative Energies Agency (CEA). The laboratory is responsible for basic research in the field of fuel behaviour, both from a theoretical and experimental point of view.

This post-doctoral work is a one year contract, renewable once. It would ideally begin in January 2012.

Scientific background & Aim of this work:
During in-reactor irradiation, the oxide nuclear fuel (based on UO2) undergoes under normal and off-normal conditions strong thermo-mechanical stresses leading to irreversible modification (i.e. cracks, …). Codes enable to describe at the macroscopic scale the thermo-mechanical behavior of fuel rods (made of fuel pellets and the cladding) under in-reactor irradiation. Their improvement implies a better description of the mechanical deformation modes in the UO2 ceramic at the grain scale. Their size typically ranges from a few microns up to a few tens of microns. It is therefore of high interest to determine the nature of defects created during mechanical stress at the nanometer and micrometer scales.
The main goal of this post-doctoral work is to combine two analytical techniques for characterizing these microstructural modifications: a first local one (Transmission electron microscopy) and a second at a larger scale (X-ray diffraction). Ex-situ and in-situ experiments will be focused on the study of the UO2 plastic behavior.
Within this framework, the associate should be able to compare the UO2 behaviour under mechanical loading with that already characterized on irradiated samples.
Results of these analyses are opened for publication.

Professional Profile of the applicants:
The candidate should have a PhD in material sciences, and have strong qualifications in the field of crystallography and TEM. Techniques for characterizing dislocations should ideally be mastered.
The post-doctoral fellow will be based mainly at Cadarache but he will have to work in close collaboration with scientists from the CEMES CNRS laboratory (Toulouse, France).

Applications (resume and motivation letter) should be sent by email to:
