An excellent opportunity is available for research on neurodegenerative disease. Decreases in RNA editing in transcripts encoding the dominant AMPA receptor subunit have been reported in Japanese sporadic ALS patients (Nature. 2004 Feb 26; 427(6977) :801).The UK Motor Neurone Disease Association have agreed to fund a two year project to replicate this finding in European cases using spinal cord material from ALS patients stored in the Sheffield Brain and Spinal Cord Tissue Bank. Further studies will investigate mechanisms underlying alterations in RNA editing by examining the expression and interactions of the RNA editing ADAR enzymes in affected motor neurons and in experimental models.

We offer optional membership of the MRC pension scheme and excellent training and development opportunities.
